This Himachali Handicraft-inspired design is universally liked and used by both Men and Women.
Extra care has been taken in the production to ensure a soft feel and smooth texture. It will give a cozy and warm feeling in cold winters.
The full size of the shawl makes it easy to drape and team it up with just about anything, from wrapping yourself during the morning cup of tea to an evening out enjoying live music outdoors. It will prove to be a cherished gift for the elderly owing to its versatility and easy maintenance.
MATERIAL OF THE SHAWL: SHEEP WOOL
The wool of the shawl comes from a unique variety of sheep that is known for its warm fleece.
The local wool is procured from the sheep of the Himalayan valley in India. During the summer season, the sheep migrate to the higher hills by the shepherds. With the advent of winter, they are brought back to their villages located in the valley. During the autumn and spring seasons, they shear the sheep for wool. The wools of sheep are cleaned and spun in the local mills to make the soft fiber. Moreover, it can be dyed quite easily and effectively, and for that reason, the wool is tinted in bright colors.
WEAVING OF THE HIMALAYAN SHAWL:
This shawl is made by using a traditional loom. The weaving technique is the tilt process of weaving. In this procedure, the woolen shawls are manually made by winding, drafting, denting, pulling, and adjusting as per the requirement. The geometric decoration of the shawl border is woven as a basketweave with the help of a slit-tapestry or dovetailing technique. The artisans use the color graph as the reference for the design that they will weave manually.
THE DESIGN AND PATTERNS OF THE SHAWL:
It has been said that the geographic patterns of the Himalayan shawls are hugely influenced by the mystic-spiritual motifs of Buddhists and Hindus. The weavers get the inspiration for the motifs of the shawls from the surroundings, life's philosophy, traditions, and religion. Many of the symbols of the Himalayan shawls represent the Buddhist religion and beliefs. Sometimes, it also depicts local flora and fauna on the border. The bright colors used for the shawl represent the enthusiasm for the life of the people of the valley.
