Known as bu-ray (insect cloth) in Bhutan and Tibet and as Eri in India, this rugged wild silk fabric is made from the pierced cocoon of the Attacus Ricini moth whose larvae feed on the leaves of the castor oil tree, in the jungles of Assam. Popular in Bhutan and Tibet, eri silk was imported from Assam for centuries and traditionally used for monk's shawls and the famed Tibetan shirt. Because the silk is harvested after the worm has emerged, it is considered a ‘non-violent' silk.
Buray combines the warmth of wool and the softness of silk. An everlasting fabric, it ages with grace and comfort, developing a sheen and supple drape that molds to the body.
CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF ERI SILK :
Eri silk is also called peace silk as the moths that generate the silk are not killed before the silk is spun. Eri silk is known for its thermal qualities (warm in winter and cool in summer), softness, at the same time sturdiness.
Ahimsa silk is produced after the silk moth has left its cocoon, making it a cruelty-free fabric. "Ahimsa" means non-violence in Sanskrit. Ahimsa is an ancient practice of not harming any living creature, from human beings to the simplest of Earth's creatures. It means non-aggression, not only in action but even in thought. Made in this state of non-aggression, this shawl carries a powerful, peaceful vibration, reminding the meditator to seek peace during meditation
